The effort to restore
wolves to parts of their historic range in North America has unfolded as a classic cultural
conflict. While ecological data mounts—much of it suggesting
that wolves play a disproportionately important role in their native ecosystems—the
struggle between agricultural interests and those who seeks to restore
wolves overshadows much of what we’ve learned about wolves
and how to live with them.
In the Southern Rocky Mountains, conservationists and state officials
are attempting to shift the wolf restoration debate away from the classic
conflict and toward a win-win course. Though not without strife, the
approach has thus far yielded significant positive results, an! d holds the potential to set a positive precedent for
the restoration of wolves and other imperiled species.
Rob Edward—Director of Carnivore
Restoration for Sinapu, Co-director of the
Southern Rockies Wolf Restoration Project, and one of four conservationists
serving on Colorado’s
Wolf Management Working Group—will share his perspective on wolf recovery
in Colorado.
